This book is dedicated to the biography of perhaps the most unusual of Russia's emperors. Paradoxically, he himself never desired unlimited autocratic powers, having been raised in a republican spirit, and always believed in the triumph of law over tyranny, and freedom over slavery. In his youth, Alexander admired the achievements of the French Revolution and hoped to change Russia's political system by granting it a constitution and parliament. Having ascended the throne under dramatic circumstances, following the assassination of his father, the young emperor nevertheless attempted to implement his program of reforms. In foreign policy, he loudly declared his goal to be Russia's renunciation of conquests and the establishment of a lasting peace in Europe. However, this very same goal led Alexander to a fateful clash with Napoleon Bonaparte, which lasted nearly ten years. It ended with a long-awaited victory over the enemy, the entry of Russian troops into Paris, and the reorganization of all of Europe on new principles, in which Alexander I played a decisive role. To further maintain peace, he became the ideologist of the Holy Alliance, and this closely intertwined with his religious quest and his attempts to rethink his own place in the world.
This biography, for the first time, reveals to the reader both the depth of his proclaimed political ideas and the hidden emotional picture of Alexander I's inner turmoil. It presents the personality of the Russian Tsar, with all his hopes and disappointments, successes and failures, allowing us to raise many questions relevant to Russian historical consciousness.
