Clyde Griffiths, "an average young American with a typically American outlook on life," the nephew of a wealthy Lycurgus manufacturer, Samuel Griffiths, who is striving to establish himself in high society at any cost, begins an affair with his cousin's friend, 17-year-old Sondra Finchley, a wealthy heiress of another local manufacturer, a beautiful, spoiled, narcissistic representative of the city's "golden youth." An American Tragedy (1925) – a true crime story, a psychological drama and at the same time a harsh rebuke to the “American dream” – became Theodore Dreiser’s most famous novel and the basis for several feature films: from the classic Hollywood film versions by Josef von Sternberg (1931) and George Stevens (1951) to the free interpretation in Woody Allen’s Match Point (2005).
