This book presents the entire surviving corpus of correspondence between two eminent philologists, historians of Russian literature and social thought—Mark Konstantinovich Azadovsky (1888–1954) and Yulian Grigorievich Oksman (1895–1970). The letters span the years 1944–1954 (from Oksman's return from Kolyma to Azadovsky's death)—a dramatic and dark decade in Soviet history, when the Stalinist regime struck with particular force at science and culture (the Zhdanov decrees on literature and art, the fight against "servility," "cosmopolitanism," and so on). The letters intertwine scientific and literary themes with discussions of the general state of Soviet philological scholarship and the moral challenges facing scholars at critical moments in history. The correspondence is accompanied by detailed scholarly commentary—a kind of "guide" through the labyrinth of philological scholarship in the postwar years. Compared to the first edition, the notes have been significantly expanded, primarily due to new materials, both archival and those that appeared in 1998–2024.
