Young Krylov was patronized by Gavrila Romanovich Derzhavin himself. Krylov, who had started out as a playwright at the time, was disappointed to see his plays on stage and began publishing a satirical magazine, “Mail of Spirits.” He ridiculed the absurdity of established rules of life and was indignant at the immorality of the powerful. But the magazine was closed for its radicalism. Krylov’s first fables appeared much later, but his first book of fables made his name very famous. Ivan Krylov, the hero of numerous anecdotes and legends, nicknamed “Grandfather Krylov,” merged with his fables in the minds of his contemporaries. Vasily Zhukovsky considered his fables “poetic lessons in wisdom.” Indeed, Krylov’s lines literally became proverbs and catchphrases before our eyes. Alexander Pushkin called Ivan Krylov “a truly national poet.”
