Russians in Australia—this unusual topic is explored in a new work by renowned Australian and American historian Sheila Fitzpatrick. After World War II, the Green Continent became a new home for thousands of displaced persons—people scattered across Europe during the war and, for various reasons, unwilling to return home to the USSR. Australian authorities, for their part, sought to address the country's labor shortage, so cooperation, while not entirely smooth or ideal, was mutually beneficial: thousands of people boarded steamships to begin a new life.

The second wave of Russian immigrants came from Manchuria, where a large Russian diaspora had already lived for several decades, formed during the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway. But with the rise of the Chinese Communists to power, Russians were forced to leave their homes, and Australia became the new home for many of them. These journeys were full of dramatic events, sometimes with detective twists, when even “the most ordinary person could, with a high probability, tell the most unusual story of his wanderings.”
