The Diary of Princess Maria Illarionovna Vasilchikova (1917–1978), first published in the UK in 1984, immediately became a bestseller and was translated into many languages. The daughter of Russian aristocratic émigrés, an employee of the German Foreign Ministry from 1940, she was a friend of high-ranking officers and diplomats who participated in the plot of 20 July 1944, which ended in the unsuccessful assassination attempt on Hitler by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. After the failure of the plot, Vasilchikova kept notes using a special cursive cipher. This is one of the rare surviving documents that gives an accurate socio-psychological picture of the aristocratic opposition. The diary of a courageous and intelligent, talented and observant Russian aristocrat, loyal to her Fatherland and her culture, who preserved her decency and honour in a difficult historical situation.
