The novel "Concrete" was written by Thomas Bernhard in 1982 in one breath: like the narrator, the author begins work on the manuscript in the winter in Austria and completes it in the spring in Palma de Mallorca. By scattering transparent autobiographical hints throughout the text, exposing some fears (the animal fear of suffocation, of freezing, the fear of a clean slate) and obscuring others (poverty, intimacy), he turned the confession of the sarcoidosis patient into a truly baroque farce in which death and melancholy come together in a final dance. One can read this non-stop narcissistic speech as confessions on a psychoanalyst's couch, as a typically Austrian logico-philosophical...
