The mass exodus from Nazi Germany in the 1930s has always attracted a great deal of attention from researchers as a phenomenon, but it has tended to be biased towards the Holocaust, which traditionally occupies a large place in any discussion of refugees in this historical period, and often ends up with the events of 1939 as if the process began. Aspects related to the earlier exodus from Germany are considered only as a kind of prehistory to it. This collection presents articles that, based on a comparative analysis of different national case studies, examine the problems of refugee movements before 1939. Although Europe, of course, occupies a central place in the discussion, the collection also includes articles on this issue in the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.
