Armored cruisers, which appeared in the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries, became the second strongest, after battleships, class of warships of the world's leading fleets. Their most characteristic feature was an armored belt along the waterline. They were inferior to battleships in the strength of artillery and armor, but superior in speed and range. They were assigned the tasks of combating merchant shipping, conducting squadron reconnaissance, and at the last stage of development they still had to make up fast-moving detachments at the linear forces of the fleet.
The book shows the stages of construction, design and service of the first British armored cruisers from "Shannon", built in 1877, to a series of ships like "Orlando", built in 1888-1889. These ships circumnavigated all the oceans, representing and defending England's interests in all its colonies.
