Amedeo Modigliani is a legend in the art world. The scion of a wealthy Italian family, he left his homeland and family to live the life of an impoverished artist in early 20th-century Paris, where he found himself both friends and enemies with Matisse and Picasso, Soutine and Brancusi. Among these masters, the young Italian developed his own unique style, full of restrained energy and unabashed sensuality. Modigliani's artistic rise was cut short by his death from meningitis at the age of 35. Only then was his talent recognized, and the paintings he once struggled to sell for meager prices now grace the world's finest museums. Italian historian Corrado Augias tells Modigliani's fascinating story using archival documents, the artist's own letters, and the memoirs of those close to him.
