Robert Musil (1880-1942) was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. After graduating from cadet school, he entered the Higher Technical School in Stuttgart, then studied philosophy, psychology and mathematics at the University of Berlin. From 1924 Musil almost continuously, until the end of his life, worked on the greatest novel of the twentieth century - "Man without properties". Musil's mastery, which combined phenomenal erudition, outstanding ability to analyze and a rare writing gift, remains unsurpassed.
Ulrich, the main character of the novel, faced with "the incredible loneliness of man in the desert of trifles," tries to ward off the glitter and poverty of the outside world with the help of his self. The tale of his life can be read as a painstaking study of the modern human soul, undaunted by the ability to dream and endow the world with a vague but meaningful purpose. Like another great book, Joyce's Ulysses, Man Without Features remains the Writer's challenge to the Reader, which every connoisseur of true Literature must answer.
