In the era of industrialization, the Soviet Union attracted foreign specialists from all over the world. One of them was a young black American, Robert Robinson, who came from the Ford plant to the Stalingrad Tractor Plant in the summer of 1930 to work and train Soviet workers. The USSR at the time offered wages twice what could be expected in the Great Depression-stricken United States.
For his hard work and innovative achievements, Comrade Robinson, a non-partisan black American citizen and a deeply religious man, was elected to the Mossovet in 1934, not knowing how it would turn out for him. Sharing the fate of millions of workers in the USSR, Robert Robinson survived Stalin's purges, the Great Patriotic War, the omnipresent KGB surveillance, and fully experienced the delights of Soviet reality, including the "non-existent" in the Soviet Union domestic racism. Robinson managed to escape from the Soviet Union only 44 years later, in 1974, at the age of 67. His strong faith in God prevented him from becoming a communist, but it also helped him to remain a detached, sober, albeit sometimes naïve, observer of a vast stretch of our daily life, from Stalin to Brezhnev to Gorbachev.
