It is hard to believe that the hero of his new book is one person. Whatever he was! The failed “shepherd of God” (he abandoned the theological academy) became a preacher and author of moralizing treatises. The tsar and patriot - and at the same time a rebel (participated in the uprising against Jacob II) and a freethinker (was tried, sentenced to a pole of shame, was in prison). A spy and undercover government agent, he collected information and researched political sentiment in Scotland. Enterprising merchant (trading candles and meat, stockings and perfumes, wine, tobacco and even cats) - and at the same time eternal bankrupt, hiding from creditors. Traveler and navigator - what adventures he has experienced: both on land (cannibals, wild animals), and at sea (storms, shipwrecks, pirates, riots on a ship). He was a biographer (biography from Peter the Great to criminal criminals), a historian (from the History of the Wars of Charles XII to the General History of Trade), a novelist (the author of five “novels of education” – adventure, historical, crooked) and a poet, journalist and newspaper publisher.
But for all of us, perhaps he — and for that we are forever grateful — is the author of Robinson Crusoe.
