The Ninth Circle: A Dissident's Odyssey in a Psychiatric Gulag

"The Ninth Circle" is a story about punitive psychiatry, which emerged in the USSR on the initiative of F. Dzerzhinsky in the early 1920s. As decades passed, thousands of completely innocent people were imprisoned in Soviet special hospitals, and nothing changed. Journalist and human rights activist Viktor Davydov knows about the existence of special psychiatric hospitals firsthand: he was a prisoner himself. In these secret institutions, unlike the usual islands of the "gulag archipelago," prisoners did not exist. Their applications to the state authorities were not considered, their injuries and deaths were not investigated, and the term was not determined by law. There were terrible rumors about these institutions even in the camps, and in the West for a long time they were not known about them at all. Fortunately, the author of "The Ninth Circle" managed to survive, was released from prison, and told not only about his own experiences, but also about the suffering of many people - workers, intellectuals, artists, and writers - who experienced all the horrors of punitive psychiatry.
