Nadezhda Vasilyevna Plevitskaya (1884-1940) was a Russian émigré singer, a famous performer of Russian folk songs and romances. According to legend, Emperor Nicholas II called her "Kursk Nightingale"; in subsequent political history she became known as "Kursk Nightingale of the NKVD"; she was convicted as a Soviet spy in the case of the kidnapping of the white general Eugene Miller and died in a French prison.
In the book, in addition to memoirs N.V. Plevitskaya "My way to the song" and "My way with the song", included: a story-parable on the biblical theme of the writer Alexei Remizov "Venetz", memories of Plevitskaya famous figures of culture and art - directors Sergei Eisenstein and Vsevolod Meyerhold, conductor Sergei Mamontov, singer Leonid Sobinov, composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, emigrant Dmitry Meisner and others. As a child, Nadezhda Vinnikova was called Dezhka by her relatives, and she, inclined to singing and dancing from an early age, twisted the round dance into "karagod". This explains the unusual title of the book.
