Dmitry Milyutin on the Caucasus: reports, notes, and dissenting opinions

Dmitry Milyutin was one of the key figures in 19th-century Russian history—the Minister of War and the main initiator of military reforms in the 1860s and 1870s. Although his life and legacy have been extensively studied, only a small number of documents have been published in scholarly literature. D.A. Milyutin first visited the Caucasus in 1839, and 20 years later, he left the region as one of the victors over the formidable Imam Shamil.

The documents included in this collection, from the collections of the Manuscript Department of the Russian State Library and the Russian State Military Historical Archive, fill this gap. While they shed light on D.A. Milyutin's activities in the Caucasus as an administrator, they also demonstrate the evolution of the Russian authorities' approaches to conquering the region.

The cover features a portrait of D.A. Milyutin by an unknown artist of the second half of the 19th century from the collection of the A.A. Takho-Godi National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan.
