A new book in the series "Strangers" opens an unknown page of the history of Russian emigrants. Natalia Iosifovna Ilyina (1914-1994) - one of the few writers who reflected in her memoirs the experience of the Far East, not the best known to contemporaries and descendants of emigration. The life of this woman resembles an adventure novel: an aristocrat by birth (her mother, née Voeikova, was of noble birth, and her father was a colonel in the White Army, Joseph Ilyin), Ilyina as a child met the revolution in the family estate. Then there were years of wandering, ending with emigration to Harbin, where the Ilyins had to start a new life. After 1930s Japan occupied Manchuria, like many others, Natalia Ilyina and her family moved to Shanghai, where she began her literary career in Russian-language newspapers. In 1946 she took Soviet citizenship, and in 1947 she returned to her native country. Here she will live until the end of her days, working in magazines and newspapers, publishing autobiographical prose. The return became for Ilyina a long-awaited contact with her homeland. Ilyina tells about her rediscovery of Russia in two dimensions: to the reader - in memoirs and to her loved ones - in letters, excerpts from which are included in the book. The reissue of the book "Roads and Fates" is supplemented with several unique materials. These are "Musina's Memoirs," a memoir by Ilyina's early deceased cousin, Maria Alexandrovna Voeikova-Kiseleva; a story by Ilyina's father, Joseph Sergeevich, "Apa," dedicated to his daughters; and a foreword by Veronique Jobert, Ilyina's niece, now a professor at the Sorbonne.
