The name Georgy Isidorovich Polonsky (1939–2001) is well known thanks to the films based on his screenplays: "We'll Live Till Monday" (1968), "The Key Without the Right to Transfer" (1972), and "Don't Leave..." (1989). But Polonsky's texts are also valuable in their own right—they are captivating, distinguished by a virtuoso precision of dramatic writing: under the influence of small, sand-like events, the characters in his stories change, the truth is imperceptibly distorted... Incredible effort can be required to preserve oneself, to go against the grain, to overcome fear or pain. Polonsky's fictional worlds (the kingdoms of Abydonia or Pukhoperonia, for example) are also free of this saccharine quality; it's no wonder his tales are for adults. The heroes always pursue lofty ideals. But not every character is a hero. Even in magical kingdoms...
