Prince Vlad III, who ruled Wallachia in the 15th century, went down in history with the nicknames Dracula—not only "Son of the Dragon" but also "Son of the Devil"—and Tepes, "the Impaler." In modern popular culture, his name is firmly associated with the image of a bloodthirsty vampire, while in Romania, he is celebrated as a folk hero, a fighter for the country's independence. Many legends and few documentary evidence survive about Dracula, yet they allow us to reconstruct the biography of this extraordinary ruler, who lived at the turning point of an era, at the juncture of the confrontation between the most powerful powers of his time—the Ottoman and Holy Roman Empires, Hungary, and Poland.

Historian Vadim Erlikhman, in his book, examines not only the life of the real Vlad Dracula but also the development of the "black legend" about him, from Renaissance popular prints to the latest Hollywood films. Inevitably, vampire legends are also touched upon, although Dracula only became associated with them in the 19th century. Whether this was a coincidence or not is a complex question, which the author also examines.
