This complete edition of the texts of the novels is reproduced for the first time from the first book publications of The Twelve Chairs in 1928 and The Golden Calf in 1933. During the Soviet era, the novels were repeatedly reprinted, subject to revisions, changes, and substantial reductions. The cycle of novels "Extraordinary Stories from the Life of the City of Kolokolamsk" was published in several issues of the magazine "Chudak" in 1928-1929 by the authors under the pseudonym "F. Tolstoyevsky". The appendix publishes not included in the main text of the novel "The Twelve Chairs" chapter "The Past of the Registrar of the Registry Office", first published in the magazine "30 Days" in 1929 as an independent story. The magnificent illustrations for this edition are by Olga Grablevskaya, winner of the Lermontov 2014 professional artists' competition.
