Giotto and the Orators: Reflections of Italian Humanists on Painting and the Discovery of Composition

Does the language we use to talk about paintings influence our visual perception? How did neoclassical Latin shape our understanding of painting today? To answer these questions, eminent British art historian Michael Baxandall analyzes the works of Petrarch, Boccaccio, Villani, Vittorino da Feltre, Guarino da Verona, Biondo, Valla, Leon Battista Alberti, and other significant figures of 14th- and 15th-century Italian high culture. Describing the mutual influence of linguistic traditions and visual experience, the author examines how humanists developed the most important modes of commenting on painting between 1350 and 1450, focusing in particular on their discovery of the concept of composition. Michael Baxandall (1933–2008) was an art historian and professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught at the Warburg Institute.
