Among the many concerns with which the Russian Orthodox Church lives today, the issues of missionary work and Christian enlightenment deserve special attention. It is significant that at the Jubilee Council of Bishops in 2000, not only the Council of New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian XX century, but also two ascetics of our Church, who shone in the works of the apostolic education of the peoples of our fatherland, were canonized. These are the well-known workers of the Altai Ecclesiastical Mission, St. Makariy (Glukharev), the founder of the mission, and the successor of his work, St. Makariy of Moscow and Altai (Nevsky).
From the time of their canonization, numerous books would have been expected containing research on their missionary work, epistolary and homiletic heritage. We cannot say that such books did not appear at all, but their number is so small that we can safely say that modern church society pays little attention to the feat of these saints and the contribution they made to the creation and expansion of our Holy Church on the territory of Russia and, in particular, Altai.
This collection of sermons of St. Macarius of Moscow can only partially fill the gap. The work of fully identifying and publishing the whole complex of documents relating to the circumstances of the life and ministry of St. Macarius, as well as St. Macarius, is still waiting for its doers and will take a lot of time.
The current publication is based on the publication “The Complete Collection of Preaching Works (Words, Conversations, Teachings, Epistles, Invocations and Instructions) of Makariy, Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna, for the entire period of his service as bishop (1884-1913)” (Sergiev Posad, 1914. 1136, XX page) and is supplemented by a number of sermons published after 1913.
