Valeria Sobol explores the topos of love as illness in Russian literature of the late eighteenth-nineteenth century with a focus on the epistemological potential of this seemingly banal cultural cliché. Using the material of literary works, as well as medical publications and journalistic texts, the author shows that the traditional motif of love affliction was in fact an important literary device through which writers addressed the most pressing issues of their time, such as the relationship between soul and body, the emancipation of women, and the role of positivist science in society.
