One of the most prominent representatives of Russian Symbolism, the writer, playwright, and publicist Fyodor Sologub (Fyodor Kuzmich Teternikov) ranks among the most unusual, even enigmatic, figures of the Silver Age. The primary theme of his work was the longing for death and a dark, pessimistic view of the world around him. Contemporary critics often called Sologub a "maniac," "sadist," or "psychopath," failing to recognize that all his texts were written in search of solace, a different, more beautiful reality. The author of this book, literary critic and PhD in Philology Maria Savelyeva, recounting the writer's life, shows that for many years, "death as a consolation" was merely an abstract image for Sologub, one that warded off terrifying thoughts rather than fueling them. In its day, Sologub's major novel, The Petty Demon, was read, according to Alexander Blok, "by all of reading Russia." Later, during the Soviet years, the writer's work was forgotten by the general readership. Fyodor Sologub's biography demonstrates how captivating and atypical for Russian literature his dark tales are.
