Heroes of Voltaire’s novels appear “from the outside”, and their freshness of perception emphasizes the unsightlyness of reality.
In this reality, the priests turn against Zadig for dissuading widows from burning themselves on the corpses of their husbands. The simple-minded person does not understand why marriage with a loved one requires the consent of the pope living in another country and speaking a foreign language, and why the actions of a religious people are so at odds with what is written in the Bible. Giant Micromegas is asked not to bother destroying the Earth, as humans handle it themselves, and the optimist Candide faces cruelty and violence as a natural state of the world.
Voltaire was not a revolutionary, but his intellect and talent made him unmistakably grope for the sore spots of society. His stories, created in the second half of the XVIII century, and now in many ways read as if they were written yesterday.
