The Russian classic Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov continues the theme of the superfluous man, begun by Pushkin.

The charismatic, handsome Grigory Pechorin is disillusioned with life. High life has corrupted him, and he no longer enjoys simple human joys. He tries to imbue his existence with at least some meaning.

But these attempts cause those around him to suffer. His love for the Circassian woman Bela destroys her family. His interference in the life of a quiet village causes turmoil. His reluctance to communicate with an old friend inflicts a severe emotional wound. Everything Pechorin touches is shattered. He himself realizes this and suffers even more.

After reading the novel, you will see how the vices of society can destroy a person's personality.

The book also includes the unfinished novel "Princess Ligovskaya," whose characters Lermontov later transferred to "A Hero of Our Time."
