City of the Doomed: An Honest Report on Seven Colonies for Life-Sentenced Prisoners

Journalist and human rights activist Eva Merkacheva traveled to all seven of Russia's life colonies, where no one wants to end up of their own free will. She interviewed colony staff and inmates and described in her book everything she was able to see and learn honestly and unvarnished. The author described in detail the daily routine in the colonies, the life of the prisoners, the prisoners themselves and how prison changes people, the realization of the gravity of the crimes committed and the fact that they will not be free for the rest of their lives.
Eva Merkacheva communicated with killers, maniacs, pedophiles and other criminals who committed deeds so terrible that society preferred to exclude them from their lives forever. She tried to understand what drove them, once perfectly normal, to commit crimes, what made them monsters in human form; whether they repented or, on the contrary, regretted that they could not continue to do evil.
