The "Theater Seasons" series is a fascinating journey into the world of theater.
"The Russian Shakespeare," "The Columbus of Zamoskvoretsky"—those are the names playwright Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky was called by his contemporaries. A creator of the Russian national repertoire, he brought to the stage a whole gallery of distinctive characters. Ostrovsky's characters include wealthy merchants and petty officials, provincial actors and pious wanderers, rich widows and marriageable girls. The playwright's creative life was closely linked with the Maly Theater, rightly called "Ostrovsky's House": he participated in productions of his plays, befriended the actors, and often attended rehearsals.
This edition includes six of A. N. Ostrovsky's most famous works: the dramas "The Storm" and "The Dowry," the comedies "Our Own People—Let's Settle Accounts!" and "Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man," as well as plays about the people of the "Forest" theater and "Guilty Without Guilt," where stage and life are intricately intertwined. The book features photographs of famous productions of the playwright's plays, from performances on the Imperial stage to the directorial efforts of Vsevolod Meyerhold, Sergei Eisenstein, and Alexander Tairov.
