The book by renowned Soviet writer Yuri Sergeevich Rytkheu (1930-2008) includes four stories about the inhabitants of the harsh polar region of Chukotka. The first story, "The Most Beautiful Ships," is based on the fate of three generations of a Chukotka family. The second story, "The Wolverine's Trail," explores how not everyone embraced the benefits of civilization that arrived in Chukotka villages during the Soviet era. The third, "When the Whales Leave," tells the story of a man who is left alone in the vast tundra and his own soul because he betrayed his friends and family, all those who helped him in his time of need. The story "Keeper of the Fire" tells the story of a simple taiga hunter who dedicated his life to serving others.
