In 1944, Raphael Lemkin (a Polish lawyer and author of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide) coined the term "genocide" to describe a foreign occupation that destroyed or permanently crippled a subject population. Following this tradition, Empire, Colony, Genocide incorporates genocide into the epochal geopolitical transformations of the last 500 years: the European colonization of the globe, the rise and fall of continental land empires, forced decolonization, and the formation of nation-states. This perspective challenges conventional understandings of twentieth-century mass crimes and demonstrates that genocide and "ethnic cleansing" were integral parts of imperial expansion.

The book is a disturbing and provocative read, exploring fundamental methodological and conceptual understandings of genocide. This thus positions genocide studies as an independent field, largely independent of the Holocaust studies that have dominated to date, and places the latter in a broader context. This context is the contemporary history of violence, which arose in its continuing forms hand in hand with the industrial mode of production.

This publication is addressed to specialists in the study of various historical eras, as well as to the public interested in the history of conquests, wars, migrations, and colonization.
