The first and still the only history of the formation of doctrinal individualism, whose theoretical foundation was economic theory and whose practical consequence was liberalism. Individualism's starting point is the psychology of the individual, and its ultimate goal is the protection of the individual.

The author begins with the emancipation of social philosophy from religion and theology (Hobbes and Mandeville), and examines the formation of the core of the classical doctrine of individualism (the Physiocrats, Hume, Smith, Ricardo, Malthus) and the refinement of its various aspects (Dunoyer, Mill). A. Schatz then analyzes the concepts of Bastiat, Tocqueville, Taine, Spencer, and Christian thinkers.

In the second half of the 19th century, the sudden triumph of democracy in France, with its immature electoral masses, necessitated the unification of economic and political liberalism within the framework of the doctrine of liberal democracy. The final chapters are devoted to what the author considers to be dead-end branches of individualism—anarchic and aristocratic.
