After the partition of the former British colony of British India in August 1947, a military conflict broke out between India and Pakistan. The reason was a dispute over the ownership of Jammu and Kashmir, which had a predominantly Muslim population but a Hindu ruling class. The Maharaja of Kashmir, Hari Singh, decided to declare independence. On October 21, 1947, the invasion of Kashmir by Pakistani paramilitaries began. Hari Singh appealed to New Delhi for help. India imposed a condition that Kashmir must join India in order to receive aid. The Maharaja agreed and the Indian government recognized the principality's accession to India on October 27. Indian troops were sent to Kashmir... In accordance with a UN resolution, an armistice came into effect on January 1, 1949. On July 27, India and Pakistan signed a ceasefire line agreement. Approximately 60% of Kashmir came under Indian control and 40% came under Pakistani control
