Major General Alexander Ivanovich Spiridovich of the Separate Corps of Gendarmes was a man devoted to the idea of monarchical power. Spiridovich knew the history of revolutionary parties very well - for many years he was engaged in political investigation. With the outbreak of World War I, A.I. Spiridovich, providing personal security for the Emperor, accompanied him on trips to the front, to the Stavka and front units. In 1915 A.I. Spiridovich was promoted to major-general for his service achievements. But he summarized his search experience in books about the fight against revolutionaries, which were published in the printing house of the Security Branch and used by the gendarmes as reference and training publications. General Spiridovich perceived the collapse of the Russian Empire, the overthrow of the monarch and subsequent events as a great tragedy. If the Provisional Government had not imprisoned him in the Peter and Paul Fortress in the days of the February Revolution, perhaps he would have found a way to save the royal family. The book "History of Bolshevism in Russia from its origin to the seizure of power" was written by him in exile and published in Paris in 1922.
