"The Italy of Bygone Days" is a diary entry by one of the most famous writing tandems, the brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, after whom the most prestigious literary prize in France is named.
For six months, from November 1855 to May 1856, they traveled from Domodossola to Naples, absorbing the atmosphere of Italian cities, peering into their architecture, examining, as if under a microscope, mosaics, frescoes and paintings in cathedrals and museums, noticing the peculiarities of local residents.
The reader of this book will see not embellished pictures with bright landscapes, but naturalistic sketches that form a multifaceted collage of details, caught by a keen eye and described in a precise, and sometimes caustic style.
