Lidiya Ginzburg (1902–1990) is known primarily as a brilliant literary scholar, author of works on the works of Lermontov and Herzen, and the books "On Lyrics," "On Psychological Prose," and "On the Literary Hero." However, she considered her greatest achievement to be nonfiction, which she wrote mostly for herself, without hope of publication. Time had other plans: during the years of perestroika and later, Ginzburg's diaries and notebooks were made available to readers.

This publication includes the researcher's memoirs, which create a unique picture of literary life from the 1920s to the 1980s—reminiscences of Akhmatova, Mayakovsky, Mandelstam, Oleynikov, Bagritsky, Shklovsky, Tynyanov, and other figures of 20th-century Russian culture—as well as "Notes of a Man from the Siege"—a testimony to the psychological transformation of a person under the inhumane conditions of besieged Leningrad. Ginzburg's texts provide a remarkable example of intellectual rigor and moral fortitude, even at the moment of the collapse of humanistic ideals.
