The novel "From Castle to Castle" could have been titled "The Edge of Night." The castles Céline speaks of are, in reality, strange, nightmarish phantoms named War, Hatred, and Poverty.

This is less a novel than a confession, for Céline is not a man of objectivity. With inimitable humor, he describes the distraught Germans, upon whom all of Europe is collapsing, the Vichy ministers without ministries, and the Marshal himself on the eve of his trial. This is a view of the war from a different perspective, the view of a brilliant writer endowed with an astonishing ability to see what might be called "the seamy side of life."

The translation is provided with detailed annotations and commentary.
