Writer Radiy Pogodin experienced much in life—he died during the siege of Leningrad, fought (he was awarded two Orders of Glory and two Orders of the Red Star), fought his way to Berlin (his experiences during the siege and war formed the basis for his autobiographical novel "I'll Catch Up with You in Heaven," one of the best books in Russian literature about the war and the Leningrad siege). After the war, he was labeled an "enemy of the people" and served time in a labor camp under a notorious article of the Criminal Code... Such was his "rich" life experience. Pogodin entered literature in the 1950s. He began with children's books: "Brick Islands," "Stories of Happy People and Good Weather," "Tren-bren"... Later, in the 1970s and 1980s, the theme of war increasingly and distinctly resonated in his works, even in children's books, and for a writer with his background, this is understandable—the past is returning, now in books. But what's important is that despite his experiences, Pogodin's books are filled with warmth and kindness. He also knows how to choose and arrange words in such a way that a miracle occurs—that ordinary miracle when words in a book begin to sparkle, glow with all the colors of life, resonating in the reader's heart.
In addition to the novel "I'll Catch Up with You in Heaven," one of the writer's creative peaks, this volume includes a complete cycle of semi-realistic, semi-fantastical stories about Vasily Yegorov, artist and soldier ("River"), and other fine examples of Pogodin's prose. August 2025 marked the centenary of the master's birth, and this book is our tribute to the memory of a remarkable writer, artist, and man.
