"Vanity Fair" is not only the most famous novel by the Victorian writer William Thackeray, but also one of the most widely read works in the world. The pages of this book unfold a broad panorama of life in England in the first half of the 19th century. People from different social circles pass before the reader in a long line: businessmen, aristocrats, officials, members of parliament, landowners, military men, diplomats, governesses, footmen. They all live by the laws of the "fair", where everything is bought and sold, where success and wealth rule everything. It is extremely fascinating to follow how their destinies intertwine with each other, forming bizarre patterns and pictures.
In this edition, the novel is published with magnificent illustrations by the artist Grigory Filippovsky (1909-1987).
