After the first ascent of Everest in 1953, its closest neighbor and the fourth highest mountain in the world, Lhotse (8,516 m), suddenly became an attractive target.
Lhotse, and especially the treacherous South Face of the eight-thousander, excited the minds of many climbers, but remained inaccessible for almost 20 years.
According to statistics, between 1950 and 2006, 252 attempts were made to climb all the peaks of the Lhotse massif, of which 26.7% were successful. Then 9 climbers died, including Jerzy Kukuczka and Vladimir Bashkirov.
Writer Edward Morgan conducted a unique study, collected and processed a lot of materials from expedition reports, interviews and films.
In his book "The South Face of Lhotse - Treacherous Routes of the World's Fourth Eight-Thousander" he tells about the most unusual attempts to climb the South Face:
- The international expedition of 1955 led by Norman Dyhrenfurth.
- The attempt to climb Lhotse Shar in 1965 by the Japanese.
- The death of Nicolas Jaeger in 1980.
- The failed expedition of Reinhold Messner in 1989.
- The rescue operation of Andrzej Marciniak, in which Arthur Heiser, Rob Hall and Gary Ball participated.
- The successful ascent of the Soviet team in 1990.
