This book includes two essays by the German sociologist, philosopher, and economist Max Weber (1864–1920), devoted to political life in Russia after the First Russian Revolution. From the perspective of a European liberal, Weber analyzes old and new Russian political institutions, as well as the constitutional drafts of 1905–1906. The author devotes particular attention to the difficulties liberal democracy faced in its attempts—usually unsuccessful—to establish itself in new soil, outside of Western Europe. These texts are published in their full Russian language for the first time.
