The book contains novels and stories of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) about the life of army men, the Caucasus and military actions, for the basis of which he took his own experience. He spent 4 years in military service and was awarded the Order for the Defense of Sevastopol. The horrors endured by the defenders of the city, he reflected in "Sevastopol stories", read everywhere and reached Alexander II. The emperor was so impressed that he ordered them to be translated into French and published in the newspaper Le Nord, which was read on the opposing side. The story "The Prisoner of the Caucasus" was written for "ABC" and first published in 1872. Tolstoy himself praised this story as "a sample of the methods and language with which I write and will write for the big ones". The story "Hadji Murat" was published after Tolstoy's death and was the result of his personal impressions and further studies of the Caucasian War. The collection also includes the stories "Two Hussars", "Decembrists", "Cossacks" and others.
