St. Tikhon did not compose his cell letters on any occasion," writes Metropolitan Eugene Bolkhovitinov, the first biographer of the saint, "but to prevent reflection, when it flowed freely at the leisure of the writer". They were written in the Zadonsk Monastery of the Theotokos, where the saint was at rest, and became the crown of his spiritual writings. The sequence of the letters is thoughtfully constructed: at the beginning he awakens the human soul from sleep, "plowing up the dry ground of the heart," and then, already awakened, takes it up the ascending steps to the Kingdom of Heaven, explaining, protecting and instructing on this path. Constructed often in the form of a dialog - questions and lengthy answers - the narratives allow him to delve into all the details and particulars of the topic revealed in the letter. St. Tikhon explains how we, according to the Lord's implicit promise, can become heirs of the Kingdom of Heaven, but also how we - by not obeying His words and not obeying His commandments - may not see Christ God in eternity. All of the saint's narratives are permeated with words from Holy Scripture, because, he reminds us, Holy Scripture is divinely inspired - through it the Holy Spirit teaches the human soul how to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Especially often he refers to the actions and words of the Savior and writes: "When we want to correct our heart to be right and right thinking, we must often look into the pure mirror of Christ's life and from that, seeing his faults, to correct. In his intimate conversation with the reader, the saint concentrates his attention, sets him internally before God and, with this communion of the human soul with its Creator and Redeemer, shows to what in this or that case should pay attention.
"Cell letters" of St. Tikhon do not give abstract knowledge and information, they educate and train the soul, help to cleanse it from unnecessary things. Their leisurely reading immerses our souls in silence and teaches reverent inner standing before God.
