Boris Andreevich Pilnyak (1894–1938) was a Russian writer of the 1920s and 1930s, the creator of a unique "ornamental" style that combined documentary and myth. The tragic fate of Pilnyak, executed in 1938, long erased his name from literary history, but today his prose returns to readers in all its artistic power.

This volume includes Pilnyak's prose works, written based on his travels in the Far East: the documentary-autobiographical novel "Roots of the Japanese Sun," the stories "Big Heart" about Mongolia, "Chinese Tale" and "The Chinese Fate of Man," as well as short stories from various years.

The writer is not interested in exotica for the sake of exotica. His gaze is riveted on how the will and culture of peoples have been shaped over centuries, how traditions coexist with the onslaught of industry, and what happens to a Russian person when he is left alone with the mysterious East.
