The renowned French classicist Romain Gary is a two-time winner of the Prix Goncourt. He declined the second prize, for his book "The Life Ahead," signed under the pseudonym Émile Ajar. Gary received his first and most important Goncourt for "The Roots of Heaven," perhaps the first "ecological" novel ever published in 1956, when the word "ecology" was still largely unknown. Gary chose Africa as the setting, where he served in the Free French Air Force during World War II.

A former Nazi concentration camp prisoner named Morel comes to Chad to fight against the culling of elephants. He soon finds supporters from various countries, including a German woman, Minna, who experienced violence and the loss of her beloved during the war. Seeing the futility of appeals and petitions, Morel and his supporters take action: they attack hunters and burn their plantations. The authorities are throwing all their efforts into capturing the rebels, but Morel remains elusive...

The novel, in which the protection of nature gradually evolves into the defense of humanity and its right to exist, is full of bitterness and incredible optimism.
