Christopher Boehm's remarkable anthropological study of the nature and mechanisms of blood feuds in Montenegro, based on fieldwork conducted by the author in the 1960s and 1970s, convincingly demonstrates the complexity and, surprisingly, the normative orderliness of this ancient social institution, successfully eradicated in the vast majority of modern societies. The author's key conclusion—that in social and ethnic groups where blood feuds are practiced, conflict resolution and the maintenance of stability are achieved through the efforts of the community members themselves—will be very useful for our contemporaries, for whom violence, alas, is not an empty phrase.
