This study is devoted to the phenomenon of yokai and its development in the history of Japan. Yokai is a multifaceted concept. It includes individual mythological characters, mysterious incidents (not necessarily involving them), and simply anything strange and surprising that breaks out of the usual order of things.
In the book, the author examines the most famous representatives of Japan's lower mythology, including tsukimono, ooni, and kitsune. Mythological characters allow us to look at the ordinary life of the Japanese from a new angle, to learn about what people feared, what they preferred in their faith, and what was most important to them. As a source base, the author uses both ancient Japanese texts and more modern texts dating back to the 20th century, which makes it possible to trace the development of yokai from antiquity to the present.
