John Ruskin was a great English writer, poet, painter, art theorist and social reformer. He is best known for his writings on art history and architecture, particularly Gothic, and for his role in shaping the Pre-Raphaelite art movement. Among his works, the most prominent are Lectures on Art, Artistic Fiction: the Beautiful and the Ugly, English Art, Modern Painters, and The Stones of Venice, among others. In all, Ruskin wrote some fifty books, seven hundred articles and lectures.
This book includes two classic cycles of lectures delivered to Oxford students, Lectures on Art and The Eagle's Nest. The first cycle is a quintessence of artistic ideas of the art historian, reflections on the history of art, its essence, role and significance in public life. Here Ruskin, for the first time in the world history of art history, speaks about the hedonistic purpose of art, as well as about "pure" and "mass" art. The second cycle deals with the relationship between science and art, the influence of the study of anatomy on the work of great artists, and the importance of an unselfish attitude to creativity. Also in this cycle Ruskin presents a whole system of education of the gaze, which will help to learn to see the beautiful in the ordinary.
