In 1957, Soviet audiences first saw Mikhail Kalatozov's now-legendary film "The Cranes Are Flying," based on Viktor Rozov's play "Forever Alive" (1943). The playwright himself wrote the screenplay, starring Tatyana Samoilova and Alexei Batalov. A year earlier, a young theater group of graduates from the Moscow Art Theater School, soon to become famous as "Sovremennik," had made a name for themselves with a production of this play. Rozov's plays were staged by directors such as Oleg Efremov and Anatoly Efros: during the "Thaw," the "Rozov boys," uncompromising in their tolerance for vulgarity and restless hearts, true poets and Don quixotes true to their ideals, took to the stage. This edition presents five plays by Viktor Rozov. Their heroes face a test before life itself: is it really so easy, having passed all the trials, to remain true to human dignity and preserve nobility and kindness in the heart?
