Compiled in the 12th and 13th centuries, the Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh legends, comprises twelve stories. Some are based on reimagined plots from ancient Celtic mythology and once served as a resource for young bards (scholars speculate that the collection's name derives from the Welsh mab, meaning "youth"). Others were influenced by European chivalric romances, which, in turn, were influenced by Celtic legends about King Arthur and his knights, Tristan and Iseult, and the Holy Grail. The stories in the collection are joined by the adventures of the legendary bard Taliesin, who lived in the 6th century. Although the Mabinogion was not discovered by European culture until the 19th century, it exerted a profound influence, contributing to the development of fantasy and literary fairy tale genres.
