Pavel Petrovich Bazhov's tales had a talented co-author: an illiterate old man, the guard at the Polevskoy factory, a joker and a cheerful fellow named Vasily Alekseevich Khmelinin. Adults gave him two nicknames—Stakanchik and Protcha—to which he responded. And for children—among whom was the future writer—he was "Grandfather Slyshko"; the kids would flock to the guardhouse on Dumnaya Mountain to listen to tales of the girl Azovka and the Poloz, Snake Mountain and Danila the Master, of treasure-hunting superstitions, of all sorts of land riches... The old man told stories as if he had seen and heard everything himself. When places visible from the mountain were mentioned, he would point to them with his hand. But if asked to tell a story, he would say: "Only these aren't fairy tales, but rather tales and anecdotes." "Some things, listen, aren't even suitable for telling to everyone. You have to be careful..."

Half a century later, P. Bazhov brilliantly recreated the factory guard's anecdotes, using the clues he retained in his memory: the skeleton of the tale, the style, individual names, and expressions. His knowledge of the region's history, his familiarity with the native local dialect, and the writer's own life, which passed through the same places where Grandfather Slyshko lived and composed his tales, all contributed.
